On Saturday, Dec. 12, 17 members of the Tuttle High School Band auditioned for the Shortgrass Honor Band. The Shortgrass Honor Band is a regional honor band for smaller schools in the western and southwestern areas of Oklahoma. Out of the 17 members of Tuttle that auditioned, 14 were selected for the honor bands.
The audition included more than 300 students, teachers and sponsors, of grades seven through 12, from smaller schools across the region. Tuttle Band Director Seth Boothby was extremely pleased with the results and the hard work of his students.
Thursday evening, just two days before the audition, the community was treated to Tuttle Band’s Holiday Concert. Many members of the community and the school administration continue to be amazed at the skill level and progress of the band members.
“This audition shows how far the kids have come, and how great our new band director is,” said Laura Dobie, parent and former band booster president. “When you have a big concert, then have to audition against hundred of your peers just two days later, getting 14 of 17 members selected is a testament to this program and to Mr. B.”
Tylar Gregg was the only seventh grader to audition and earned a 14th chair slot on the flute. The members of the Junior High Honor Band are: freshman Zach Welch, 2nd chair trumpet; freshman Dylan Routh, 5th chair trumpet; freshman Chelcie Black, 7th chair flute; freshman Easton Poplin, 7th chair percussion; freshman Nathan Dobie, 9th chair trumpet; 8th grader Ben Purintun, 12th chair trumpet; and 8th grader Courtney Lee, 16th chair clarinet. Earning top honors as first chair was 8th grader Zac Hooper, tenor sax.
The members of the High School Honor Band are: junior Thane Whitford, 2nd chair tuba; junior Paul Curtis, 6th chair trumpet; and junior Caleb Scott, 8th chair trumpet. Sophomore Raven Shirley was selected as the only contra bass clarinet player for the honor band. Receiving top honors as head drummer (1st chair percussion) for the honor band was senior drum major Jennifer Dobie. Tuttle also took a Newcastle high school student along, Jensen Ropp, who was selected as 5th chair clarinet.
The honor bands practices and concerts are scheduled for March 8 and 9, 2010 in Elk City. The community is extremely proud of its band and the accomplishments of its members
