Shawn Streater resigns to take job at Byng HS

Shawn Streater has resigned as Tuttle’s baseball coach and will be taking over the Byng program this year.

“Tuttle was good to us,” Streater said. “This was a tough decision, but it was a chance for us to get back closer to home and family.”

The Byng job came open when coach Charles Copeland left to take over at Cushing. Streater was also offered the Jenks job but turned it down to stay close to home.

Streater’s Tiger teams have had tremendous success in the past four years, winning at least thirty games per season and making it to the 4A state championship game every year.

They won it in 2006 and 2009 and were state runners-up in 2007 and 2008. In fact, they beat Byng, the heavy favorite that year, in the state semis on their way to the 2006 championship.

One drawing card for Streater was the opportunity to coach both fall and spring baseball. The Pirates don’t play football, but instead play fall baseball.

“This is something I’ve always wanted to do,” he said. “I’m coming to a great school system and to coach at one of the top fall-spring schools in the state.”

The Pirates have a lot of tradition and are always in the mix somewhere in the post-season. They won their last fall state championship in 2004 and their last spring championship in 2001.
