Tuttle kicker Bobby Stonebraker knew the game was well in hand. Tuttle led 28-0. That's why he was a bit surprised when the coaches sent him in to try a third quarter field goal.
Nonetheless, the senior went onto the field, set up his tee, and then looked up. What he saw was 53 yards between him and the goal post.
Now let him tell you the story of what happened next:
"I went out there and set up my tee and looked up. That's when I realized how far it was. I was excited. I'd never kicked from farther than the 47. I wanted to get at least a 50-yard field goal at some point in my high school career.
You just have to relax. Don't try to kick it too hard. That's what a lot of kickers try to do, including me. You just have to kick it normally.
I took my usual three steps back and two steps over. We got one of the best snaps and holds we've had on a field goal. And I had all the time in the world.
It felt good coming off my foot. You have to put a little more power into it, but it's more about technique and how you hit it. You don't want to over-swing your hips."
Stonebraker hit it perfectly. The ball sailed straight through the uprights with plenty of room to spare. It would have been good from 58 yards.
Stonebraker is now drawing attention from Division-1 schools. Oklahoma State contacted him after the Tigers 21-6 victory over Newcastle on Oct. 15.
He took an unofficial visit to Stillwater recently.
Stonebraker has made five of six field goals so far this year. His previous long was from 47 yards. He's 38 of 39 on extra-points. One was blocked.
