Tigers look to complete 10-0 season at Santa Fe

TUTTLE – All that's left for Tuttle in the regular season is perfection.

Quarterback Tanner Koons ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more, and the Tuttle defense pitched its third shutout of the season here Friday, knocking off Anadarko, 31-0, and securing the District 3A-1 championship.

To top it off, kicker Bobby Stonebraker may have made the play of the game. The senior kicker nailed a career-best 53-yard field goal in the third quarter. It would have been good from 58 yards.

The Tigers, 9-0, will try to secure their sixth unbeaten regular season under head coach Phil Koons on Friday, when they travel to district cellar-dweller Santa Fe South. The Saints are 2-7 overall and 0-6 in the district. They've scored just 140 points while allowing 343 this season.

Koons has directed Tuttle to unbeaten regular seasons in 1997, 1998, 2002, 2005, and 2008. Already the Tigers have earned Koons his eighth District Coach of the Year Award, which is given each year to the coach who directs his club to the league championship.

Not only did Tuttle wrap up the district title Friday by beating Anadarko, but it also secured two home playoff dates. That means Tuttle, if it wins in the playoffs, would play on the friendly confines of Bill Hinkle Field until the Class 3A State Semifinal, which is scheduled for a neutral field.

Defense Dominates

Anadarko's speedy skill players weren't able to get on track against Tuttle's defense. The Warriors finished with just 131 total yards, almost all of which where gained in the last three quarters.

In fact, Anadarko didn't piece together a drive until late in the second quarter, with Tuttle already leading 28-0. The Warriors didn't gain their first first-down until the 3:01 mark of the second quarter. That came on a drive that saw the Warriors move to the Tuttle 8-yard line, after which Anadarko lost 8 yards on the next play and then threw three incomplete passes to end the half.

That was the only time Anadarko advanced inside the Tuttle red zone.

Anadarko did have a scoring chance early in the game, after Tuttle running back Dylan Copenbarger collided with quarterback Koons on a handoff during the first play of the game. The ball was fumbled and Anadarko's Randy Martinez recovered at the Tuttle 24.

But the Warriors gained only one yard on three plays, and a fourth-down pass fell incomplete to end the threat.

Koons, Copenbarger Take Over

Koons and Copenbarger collided with each other on the first play of the game, and then they collided with greatness. They were the only two players to carry the ball for the Tigers in the first three quarters, and they accounted for 282 of Tuttle's 294 rushing yards.

With running back Ethan Biddy sidelined because of a hip pointer and fullback Anderson Depee limited because of a deep thigh bruise, Tuttle placed the ball in quarterback Koons' hands and the game at his feet. He carried a career-high 17 times and gained a game-high 161 yards.

In addition, Koons was 5 of 8 throwing the ball for 70 yards.

Copenbarger also experienced a career night in place of Biddy. He carried 16 times for 121 yards and set up several of Koons' touchdowns with long runs of his own.

By contrast, quarterback Chandler Barr led the Warriors with 42 yards rushing on 18 carries and 56 yards passing.

First Quarter

Tuttle broke the ice on its second possession. After stopping Anadarko on the Tuttle 23-yard line, the Tigers marched 77 yards in just six plays. On the series' fourth play, Copenbarger hit Anadarko with a 47-yard run to the Warriors' 7. He carried for one yard on the next play, and then Koons raced around the left end for a 6-yard TD run with 8:31 left in the first stanza.

Bobby Stonebraker added the extra-point, and the Tigers held an early 7-0 lead.

After holding Anadarko to three plays on the ensuing possession, Tuttle continued to roll up chunks of yards. The Tigers drove 70 yards in nine plays, with Koons capping the drive on an 8-yard scoring run up the middle. He had set up his own touchdown with a nifty 21-yard scamper on the previous play.

Tuttle led 14-0 after one period.

Second Period

With 8:32 left in the half, the two clubs exchanged fumbles, with Brody Sims giving Tuttle the ball on the Anadarko 15. Koons needed just one play to find receiver Bryce Ebert for a touchdown, and Stonebraker added the extra-point to give Tuttle a 21-0 lead.

On the Tigers next possession, Koons found B.J. Morgan for a 32-yard scoring strike. That gave Tuttle a 28-0 halftime lead.

Third Quarter

Tuttle was driving on its first series of the second half, but a holding penalty put the Tigers in third-and-19. When Koons' pass fell incomplete, the coaches didn't hesitate to send in Stonebraker to try a 53-yard field goal. The senior's prior career-best was 47 yards, and he never warms up beyond the 40.

Stonebraker said the snap and hold were the best he's seen. He hit it perfectly and the ball sailed through with plenty of room to spare.
