The Geary Invitational is known as the oldest and the toughest tournament in the nation. With 66 years of competition history, the best wrestlers in Oklahoma and Texas compete for the title.
Tuttle, determined to improve on its last year’s third place finish, completed a full day of bouts, placing seven wrestlers in the championship quarter finals, five wrestlers in the consolation rounds and leading the tournament in team points.
Saturday revealed the dominating force of the Tuttle Wrestling Team as 112 pound Colton Roberts, 125 pound Sterling Hawkins, 135 pound DJ Boles, 140 pound Dylan Coppenbarger, 160 pound Jerrod Williams, 171 pound Jake Simpson, and 215 pound Shane Woods all advanced to the championship finals. Zachary Beard at 145 pounds advanced to the consolation finals. The Tigers continued to lead in team points with Broken Arrow and Claremore following respectively.
The championship round unveiled Tiger Shane Woods as Tuttle’s only crowned champion. Woods won a 14-0 major decision over Caleb Cline of Norman North to bring home his second Geary Championship, making him the fifth Tuttle wrestler in history to be crowned as a two-time Geary Invitational Champion.
The remaining six Tigers finished at runner-up and Beard took home a third place finish.
The Tigers fell short of the tournament team championship. Claremore with 122.5 points was crowned as tournament champions, Tuttle took home second place with 121 points and Broken Arrow placed third with 120 team points.
The Tigers will be hosting a home dual and tournament this week. The mat pounding excitement will begin on Thursday, Jan. 14 at 5:30 p.m. as the Tigers face Harrah and Tecumseh in a double dual. On Friday and Saturday, January 15-16, the Tigers will host the fourth Annual Greg Henning Invitational Tournament.
Wrestling will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday and noon on Saturday. Finals are scheduled for Saturday evening.
